CHAPTER 5 | Circulation

Building Approach

The approach is what the viewer sees from a distance. There are three types of approaches such as frontal, oblique, and spiral.

JT International by SOM building approach is quite massive. This is an example of an oblique building approach because the path is redirected multiple times to prolong the approach.

Building Entrances

The entrance is that viewer perceives from the outside to the inside.

The Gammel Hellerup High School by Bjarke Ingels Group in Denmark portrays an entrance from the exterior to the interior. There are doors that are created as a vertical plane that is signifying as the entrance.

Configuration of the Path

The configuration of the path consists of following the spaces in sequence. There are six types of path configuration such as linear, radial, spiral, grid, network, and composite.

The floor plan demonstrates a radial configuration of path because the central point has linear paths extending.

Path-Space Relationships

There are three path-space relationships and that is the pathway intersection, the edges, and the ending of a path.

The Christus Church in Germany's floor plan explains a path-space relationship by terminating in space. The viewer would enter the church and walk straight back to end in the apse of the church. That is not any other spaces to pass through.

Form of the Circulation Space

The three styles of openings to define spatial elements are within planes, at corners, and between planes. Adjacent spaces are imperative when designing spaces so doors create movement and pattern while windows create light. Between planes has two options of defining spatial elements by vertical planes between floor and ceiling or two planes horizontal.

This jewelry retail store has an enclosed circulation space. It forms a private area for viewers to engage and look at the jewelry. The space is links the entrances to the left and back wall plane.
