CHAPTER 4 | SPATIAL RELATIONSHIPS

Space within a Space

It is the incorporation of a smaller space within a larger space.

A real life example of a space within a spaces is the Pierre Boulez Hall designed by Gehry Partners in Berlin, Germany. The space shows the oval theater as the smaller space that is contained in a larger atrium. The theater shows separation from the outside with glass partitions, change of ceiling structure, and railing that defines space.

In the floorplan, the smaller space contained with in the larger space is clearly defined. The theater space is a differing form from the outer space which helps strengthens the form as freestanding. This shows the functional difference of the relaxed and engaging to the silent and listening portion.

Understanding this relationship in depth, I diagrammed the floorplan into a 3D model. The viewer can relate that smaller theater within the outside atrium area. The space difference between the two helps show the defined volumes within the space.

Interlocking Space

The overlapping of one volume of space to another volume of space.

The National Taichung Theater in Taichung City, Taiwan by architects Toyo Ito & Associates is an example of interlocking spaces from exterior to interior. The two overlapping spaces shows the shared space and creates a zone. The spaces retain their original spatial identity but the viewer can interpret them in a number of ways.

The floorplan shows the interlocking spaces of a rectilinear volume with an organic curvilinear space. The linking of the two original spaces is connected by the interlocking portion which has created its own integrity.

The 3D model that I constructed of the interlocking spaces allows the viewer to follow the original two spaces and then the interlocking portion that serves almost as a new space.

Adjacent Spaces

One space is next to or adjoining another space.

The architects Christ & Gantenbein portray a rectilinear design for the Swiss National Museum extension in Zurich, Switzerland. The irregular rectilinear shape is adjacent to the rectangular space. The irregular shape comes to a point that allows the viewer understand they are entering into a new space. It limits visual access and only allows a limited amount of physical access to the two adjacent spaces. The spaces are separated but also bound together.

The floorplan allows you to see the two irregular shapes such as 8 and 6 that are both adjacent to rectangular shapes.

The spatial relationship of adjacency is portrayed in the 3D model by showing the irregular space with a limited view and access to the rectilinear shape.

Spaces Linked by a Common Space

One space is the primary connection to two other spaces.

The image below shows the Lycée Schorge by Kéré Architecture. The volume of a space was displaced by the mass of the building. The building serves as a container that can be read as masses that define volumes of space. The building has created a volume by having each point connecting planes that have been formed by lines that create multiple planes defining the limits of a plane. A volume's form is the most identifying shape. This shape is creating two irregular shaped forms that are adjacent to each other.
